Area Unemployment Rate Up In May

June 26--  More people were out of work in the nine-county Vidalia trade area in May according to the state labor department.

  With the exception of Montgomery and Tattnall counties, all area counties showed increase unemployment rates from April to May.  

However, most counties unemployment rates are below the statewide average of 9.7%.  The exceptions are Jeff Davis and Treutlen counties.

Toombs County's rate of 9.3% means there were 1,336 people out of work in the county in May, an increase of 73 from April.

In the nine-county trade area, there are nearly 6,200 people out of work, an increase of nearly 2,000 since May, 2008.
