New Resource to Help Unemployed
Friday, 19 June 2009
June 19--If you are unemployed and looking for a job, the state of Georgia recently installed a program designed to help unemployed Georgians jump start their job search, develop confidence, and gain a competitive advantage in the job market.

The program, Be Work Ready, provides a fiscal incentive for those who complete the program and receive a Work Ready Certificate. Individuals take the free assessment and earn a certificate at one of the four levels--platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. At the completion of the assessment, the monetary reward comes in the form a gift card, for either the amount of $50 or $100. David Yarbrough, Vice President for Economic Development at Southeastern Technical College, says the program is designed to give those who participate an advantage in the job search process, and the gift card is used for any tool necessary to succeed in the workforce.

"The idea is to give those individuals that participate that advantage against others that are competing for the jobs that are available in the state. And the way that advantage actually happens, is that they come in and take the assessments at our particular location, the Economic Development Center. Once they've done those three assessments--one in math, reading, and locating information--if they pass all of these, and receive a bronze, silver, or gold certificate, they actually receive a $50 incentive. If they receive the platinum certificate, which is the highest level you can obtain, you get a $100 incentive. Incentives are a gift card they receive two to four weeks after they take the assessments. The gift card can be used for clothes to do an interview or supplies to make their resume look better," says Yarbrough.

The program is supported financially by federal stimulus dollars, and is available for unemployed individuals who are 18 or older, are actively seeking a job, and have earned a Work Ready Certificate anytime since September 1, 2008.
