New Bank Opens
Thursday, 11 June 2009

June 11-- The Mt Vernon Bank enjoyed a day of celebration Thursday as it held the Grand Opening of a new location on Highway 280 East in Vidalia. The new branch is the third for the bank which has been in business for 108 years.

Bank President Don Thigpen (holding scissors) says the new branch came out of necessity and the desire to better serve the people of the area.

“Well we outgrew the first location we built here. We felt that we needed a bigger facility, and we needed to get on the east side of town to better serve the people of Lyons and the other parts of Toombs County. We’re real pleased with the location and we think it’s will be good for us and the community,"he said.

Thigpen also believes community banks have a good future. "I think it's time to move on. You'll see more and more people come back to community banks to depend on their financing and their needs, because it is about doing business with people they know, people they live beside and who have known them and talked to them. I think we have a great opportunity in the future," says Thigpen.
