Monday, 08 June 2009

June 8--  Vidalia radio stations won five awards, including the top Station of the Year honor, at Saturday night's annual recognition banquet in Atlanta sponsored by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters.

Image"We are dedicating the Station of the Year award for WTCQ to the late Chuck Morris who was 98Q's program director for thirteen years before his death in April," said Zack Fowler, general manager of Vidalia Communications Corporation, which owns and operates WTCQ-FM, WYUM-FM and WVOP-AM in Vidalia.

"Chuck embodied the love of radio we all share and he practiced our creed which is based on community service, communication and committment.  He worked hard every day to help make 98Q the best it can be.  This award exemplifies Chuck's dedication to his life's work," Fowler said.

The Georgia Association of Broadcasters names a "Radio Station of the Year" annually for a station judged to be the best in large, medium and small markets.  In selecting the winners, judges consider the quality of the station's programs, how involved the station is in the communities it serves and the extent of its involvement in the GAB and other broadcasting industry activities.

98Q also won GAB awards for the best daily sports program "Sportstime," the best sports series for Chester Proctor's "Weekend Football Wrap," and the best sports story for Collins Knighton's production of "Coaches' Christmas."

WYUM-FM was honored for best new story for its coverage of the Mother's Day tornado in 2008.
