Citizens Rebuff Annexation
Wednesday, 03 June 2009

June 3--  Ninety people attended three meetings with Vidalia city officials in the past few days and only two expressed any interest in having their property annexed into the city.

"It's very clear the majority of the people in these neighborhoods are not interested in annexation and I don't anticipate there will be any other pursuit of it unless something changes," said Bill Torrance following the third and final meeting Tuesday night.

The city was trying to increase its population and tax base through annexation, but Torrance says those impacted are opposed. "Some people didn't like city ordinances like not being able to let their dogs run loose or being told they couldn't fire a firearm.  There were some who said we've got all the services already, and others just didn't want to pay the taxes," he said.
