Monday, 01 June 2009

June 1--  Seventy-nine percent of the high school juniors at Vidalia High School passed all four parts of the Georgia High School Graduation Test this year.  The state average is 80 percent.

The tests are in English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.  Eight percent passed only three tests, six percent passed only two tests, four percent passed only one test and four percent passed none of the tests.

Vidalia juniors did best on the science test with 90 percent passing. Curriculum director Lucy Claroni thinks the students benefit from the hands-on science labs. "We haved a science department that teaches science by having a lot of hands-on experiences and it seems to click with the students," she says.

The weakest area for students on the test is English Language Arts with only 86 percent demonstrating basic proficiencey.  Claroni says the school is working to improve the reading of students who failed this part of the test.

In math and social studies, Vidalia juniors were one percentage point below the state average with 93 percent passing math and 86 percent passing social studies.
