May 25--  War dead were remembered and veterans were honored during Monday afternoon's observance of Memorial Day in Toombs County.

In ceremonies hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW at Southeastern Tech in Vidalia, Lieutenant Colonel George Lewis of the Third Infantry Division at Fort Stewart said Memorial Day is important.

"It's incredibly important.  All of us have people we know, members of our community and for me personally, soldiers I've served with, who have given the ultimate sacrifice.  It's important we all take time and stop and remember them today if not everyday," he said.

Lieutenant Colonel Lewis, a veteran of the War on Terrorism in Iraq, admits multiple trips to the war zone are stressful on today's soldiers, but says most of the soldiers he knows understand they will go and will probably go more than once.  "They have the ability to manage the stress," he reports.
