Tech School Enrollment Up
Wednesday, 06 May 2009

May 6--  Technical colleges throughout the state are reporting increases in enrollment as out-of-work people return to school.

"What happens when people are unemployed, they tend to go back to school to upgrade their skills so they can be more employable.  A lot of times it happens to be a blessing because they end up in careers they enjoy more," according to Dr. Cathy Mitchell, President of Southeastern Technical College in Vidalia.

She reports STC enrollment is up about ten percent to 1,036 students while neighboring Swainsboro Tech has an increase of 12 percent.

Dr. Mitchell estimates a third of the students at STC are enrolled in medical fields which she says offer good paying jobs to graduates.  She expects that will increase once the new medical center in Vidalia is built.
