Onion Eating Contest

Once again the world famous Onion eating contest drew large numbers at this years Arts and Crafts Festival.  

ImageIn the youngest age division,ages 6 – 11, the 1st place winner is 11-year-old Andrew NeeSmith of Orangeburg, FL (in the white T-Shirt) who ate 4 Sweet Vidalia Onions.  The second place winner is Jack DeHart who ate 3.5 onions and two young eaters, Tyler Luke and Alexis Manship tied for third place with 2.5 onions each.

Image There was a slim field of only four contestants among 12 to 16 year olds.  Anthony Holloway (talking with the Sweet Onion Radio Network) downed eight onions to beat his cousin Chris Day who ate 7.5  Nathan McLeod consumed four onions.


And in one of the most exciting finishes in it’s history, last year’s 12–16 champion, Cody Peters (shown with Onion Queen Megan Caraway) ate eight onions for his 10th consecutive victory in the contest.  Russ Wagner claimed second place with seven onions and Joe Inge downed five onions for third place.


Barron Godbee of the Vidalia Lions Club is the longtime emcee of the Vidalia Onion Eating Contest which drew its largest crowd of spectators this year to cheer on the contestants.


Two "Sweeties" were in the crowd for Saturday's competition.
