Historic Courthouse Dome Renovation
Monday, 30 March 2009

March 30--  Red Wheeler of Kibbee filed the following report today after witnessing and photographing contractors removing the dome from the top of the Montgomery County courthouse in Mount Vernon.  The county has a $371,000 contract to completely re-roof the courthouse.

According to Red, "They lifted the small dome off the courthouse today.  They used a 70 ton crane with a 135 foot boom.  It almost wasn't tall enough. The small dome is much larger than it looks. It's approx 15 feet tall.  They had to lay it down on a trailer to haul it. They are going to take it back to the construction company's main offices in Eatington, Georgia and complete rebuild it.  It is supposed to be covered with heavy gage copper, and then put back on top.
This is a part of the roof restoration project. The main dome will be entirely covered with copper."
