Vidalia Mortician Honored
Tuesday, 24 March 2009

March 24--  Vidalia mortician Frank Sherman, Jr. was honored by his peers Tuesday night as the Mortician of the Year in the state's First District of the Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association.

Image"If you get up everyday and get up and put your boots on and go to work, people will give you a fair chance and that's all you need in life is a fair chance.  If you get your fair chance, you take it, you win.  What's good for one is good for everybody, I'm very appreciative," he said.

There was a full house at the Callaway Community Center in Lyons as family, friends and associates gathered to honor a man who came to Vidalia nearly 25 years ago to fulfill his dream of owning a funeral home. He bought Vidalia Funeral Home in 1985 and seven years later purchased Eternal Glory Gardens Cemetery.

"It means a lot because I came here as a stranger, and now I feel like I'm really part of the community.  I've been waiting for this for a long time.  People treat you like you treat them and there's opportunity for everybody.  I just found a good place to be and I'm really glad to be here," he said.

The mortician's association holds its annual meeting later this year in Savannah where Frank will be in the running for statewide honors.
