Lyons Woman Finds Father
Monday, 09 March 2009

March 9--  "He said there hasn't been a day gone by that he has not thought about me or where I might be, he just didn't know how to go about finding me," says Becky Carter Reaves of Lyons after her first conversation with her biological father, Dwayne Brackeen.

Becky was 14 months old when her mother, who was 18 at the time and unwed, gave her up for adoption.  When she was four, her adoptive parents moved from her native state of Colorado to Georgia.  Now, over 40 years later, she's found her father living in the small town of Bushnell, Nebraska and that she also has a half-brother and half-sister along with lots of nieces and nephews.

After their first phone call, she said, "It was the most incredible thing I could tell you.  We have so many things in common, common interests, things we like, attidudes and opinions.  He made a statement that's he's a very independent person and that's been a term used about me.  Anybody that knows me knows I'm a very strong willed and independent.  And my sister was the same way, sharing interests for our love of animals and so many other things, more than I could begin to tell you."

On the other end of the line, Becky's father, who's now 61 and in a wheelchair, said the conversation was "ecstasy."  "Not to know where she went or what kind of life she's had till now, it was always something on my mind.  The first time we got to talk, it was just the happiest day I can remember," he said.

Next on the agenda is a personal meeting between father and daughter.  Becky plans to make that trip to Nebraska March 17.
