New Mount Vernon Shopping Center
Wednesday, 04 March 2009

March 4--  A new shopping center near the town square in Mount Vernon is in the works according to Joe Filippone of the Montgomery County Development Authority.

Filippone told county commissioners this week he's having discussions with a supermarket chain and two other retailers about building the center on the four-acre lot north of the county courthouse in Mount Vernon.  He's hopeful work can start within 90 days.

At the same time, Commission Chairman Brandon Braddy reports the company which wants to build a private prison in Mount Vernon is working diligently to find investors.  Braddy has arranged for the commission to pay another visit to the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla Friday.  The Center is run by Michael Croft Enterprises which wants to open a similar jail in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County commissioners did some due diligence to determine if their deal on the joint ambulance service with Toombs County is a good deal. It is.  After checking with two private companies, county manager David Curry told the commision he was quoted annual prices in the $200,000 range.  He said the same service with Toombs County is budgeted for $150,000 this year.

The commission appointed Alvin Baker to succeed Larry Atkins on the county development authority.
