BPC Freshman Drowns
Friday, 15 August 2014

August 15--  A freshman student at Brewton Parker College in Mount Vernon drowned late Thursday afternoon in the Oconee River between Montgomery and Wheeler Counties.

College spokesman Peter Lumpkins says LaVon Woods of Columbus had just completed freshmen orientation week and had gone to the river to swim with a group of students.

"He was an incoming freshman on a wrestling scholarship.  All of the guys were athletes.  One of the popular things around that area is to go up and swim in the river and jump off that bridge.  I think it's about a 20-foot drop.

"I don't know if LaVon dove in or jumped in, I don't have those details, but he simply couldn't make it.  He didn't go under and not come back up, he did try to get to shore, but they could not help him to shore," Lumpkins said.

Andy Leanza with the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency says divers from Hazlehurst, Douglas and Baxley and rescuers from the Wheeler County EMA recovered the student's body about nine p.m. Thursday.

Lumpkins says the college is devastated about the loss.

"We are completely devastated about the news.  We offer to the Woods family and friends of LaVon our deepest and sincerest sympathy.  Our hearts are broken and our prayers are with you.  We ask prayers from all for those affected in this tragic death," he said.
