Mercy Clinic Groundbreaking
Wednesday, 13 August 2014

August 13--  Mercy Ministeries in Vidalia should have its new Mercy Medical Clinic ready to open by the first of the year.

A $500,000 addition to the Toombs County Health Department building in Lyons will give the clinic nearly 5,000 square feet of operating space.

Alan Kent, CEO of Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia, spoke at Wednesday's groundbreaking and recalled how the Mercy Clinic got started.

"I remember the first day that Dr. Conner came by and started talking about the idea of putting together a program which would get to people that there's no other way to get to.  He was way ahead of his time.  He looked around and saw what was happening in a few other progressive communities and had a vision about that here.

"The Mercy Clinic goes a long way toward stepping into that gap.  It trys to get people to the point where they get help when they need help, but they also get education and it's a ministry as well," Kent said.

Dr. Nancy Stanley has shepherded the Mercy Clinic since it started and says this is only a start.

"This is just the beginning.  This is just a building.  There's a lot of work to be done as we reach out to 14 counties that we serve, but it can be done," she said.

ImageShe also said Mercy Clinic is now challenging its patents to be a part of the solution.

"When you change it, it becomes an asset-based ministry and you start asking questions like, 'What do you have?' It changes people and they say, 'Well, I may have something that I can give,' and they begin to look at themselves differently." Stanley noted.

Mercy Clinic patient Jesus Martinez initially came to the clinic for diabetic care and has since turned into a volunteer.

"My daughter introduced me to Mercy Clinic and they taught me what it is to be sick with diabetes.  I lost two legs because of that, but Mercy Clinic has been there for me and I really appreciate it," he said.
