Tuesday, 12 August 2014

August 12--  If you've ever driven through Sparta, Georgia, you probably noticed the historic Hancock County courthouse which was the centerpiece of the small town.

ImageThis is all that is left after a fire of unknown origin broke out before 3 a.m. Monday morning.  The courthouse was built in 1883 and officials said it had records in it dating back to 1795.

Fire investigators say there is no evidence of arson and officials say some construction work at the courthouse was not involved.  The county commission chairman said workmen had only erected some scaffolding in prepartion for some renovation.
