Interim DOT Commissioner Named

February 26-- On Thursday, Gerald Ross was named Interim Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation by the State Transportation Board, to succeed Dr. Gena L. Evans while a national search to fill the position is conducted.  Mr. Ross also serves as Chief Engineer where he is responsible for the Divisions of Planning, Data & Intermodal Development; Pre-construction; Construction and Operations. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Ross is a Registered Professional Engineer in Georgia. He is married and has one daughter.

 ImageMr. Ross has spent his entire career at the Georgia Department of Transportation. After graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering from Tennessee Tech University, he began his career at the Department as a Junior Engineer in the Office of Traffic Operations.  He left the Office of Traffic Operations in 1986 to accept a position in the Office of Urban Design as a Design Engineer II. 

 Mr. Ross was promoted to Assistant State Urban Engineer in 1998.  He spent a total of 13 years in the Office of Urban Design before accepting the position of Assistant to the Chief Engineer in 1999.  Some of the major projects he produced are: I-75/I-95/I-85 rural interstates (statewide), Kennedy Interchange in Cobb County, I-285 (top end 5th lane), Lithonia Industrial Boulevard and I-20 in DeKalb County, and South Fulton Parkway, the I-85/SR 316 interchange in Gwinnett County, and the Harry S. Truman Parkway in Chatham County.

 Mr. Ross was selected for the position of State Road and Airport Design Engineer in March, 2002.  In that capacity, he designed highway project improvements in all areas of the State of Georgia.  Most of the projects were in rural Georgia. 

 In January, 2005, Mr. Ross was appointed Division Director of Planning, Data and Intermodal Development.  On September 1, 2007, he was appointed to the position of Chief Engineer becoming the first and only African- American Chief Engineer in the country. Mr. Ross is the first African American to serve in the capacity of Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation in its 94 year history.
