Reverend Owen Williams, Lyons

July 24-- Reverend Owen Williams, age 75 of Lyons, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 in the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon after a sudden illness. 

He was a native of Nashville, Georgia and was a graduate of Berrien County High School.  He attended Young Harris College and ABAC, was a graduate of Valdosta State College with a Bachelor’s in Sociology.  Later, he earned his Master’s in Divinity at Emory University in Atlanta.  He recently received his fifty-year recognition of service at the annual United Methodist Conference in Savannah. 

He pastored numerous churches across the South Georgia Conference; including Leila/Weeks, Clyattville, Sparks, Bronwood/Smithfield, Powerville/Wesley Chapel, Roberta, Buena Vista, Gordon, Vienna/Shiloh, Northview, Warner Robins, Sherwood, Columbus, and retired in Metter in 2002.  Also, he presently pastored Tazwell United Methodist Church and served as interim pastor at the First United Methodist Church of Lyons. For many years, he chaired the outdoor ministries through the Council on Ministries of the South Georgia Conference, which included youth and adult camping and canoeing trips.  He served on various committees within the districts in the South Georgia Conference.  He served as chaplain for the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Berrien County.

Reverend Williams is survived by his wife, Joyce Bishop Williams of Lyons; one son, Bart Williams and wife Teresa of Montgomery, Alabama; four daughters, Robin Williams Broughton and husband Keith of Woodstock, Faith Bishop Cantrell and husband Rusty of Cadwell, Karen Bishop Cheney and husband Cliff of McDonough, and Karla Bishop Green and husband Toussant of Suwanee; one sister Linda Priest of Buford, six grandchildren Autumn, Chase, Nikki, Kayla, Chloe, and Gavin; one great-grandchild Kinsley; one niece Laura, and one nephew Paul.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, July 24th at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Lyons with Reverend Dr. Rick Lanford, Reverend Mike McAfee, and Reverend Jim Morrow officiating.  Burial will follow at 4:00 p.m. in the Nashville Old City Cemetery in Nashville with Reverend Ronnie Wills and Reverend Wayne McDaniel officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Methodist Children’s Home, 304 Pierce Ave., Macon, GA 31204 or the First United Methodist Church Parsonage Fund, P.O. Box 71, Lyons GA 30436.
