Preliminary Budget OK'd by Montgomery BOE
Tuesday, 22 July 2014

July 22--  The Montgomery County school board approved the school system's preliminary budget at its July meeting Monday night.

The budget for fiscal year 2015 is $9.3 million with nearly two-thirds of that amount paid by state funding.  Local property taxes are expected to raise about $2.2 million which School Superintendent Randy Rodgers esimates is about $76,000 more than this year.

The increase is due to an increase in the county tax digest.  Even though the property tax rate will remain at 13.421 mils, public hearings on the budget will be held because of the additional revenue.

Rodgers says he expects to have a fund balance of nearly $750,000 at the end of the fiscal year.

All of the school board members, with the exception of Terry Outler, voted for the budget.

Meanwhile, Rodgers reports an application for state assistance in funding of a new Montgomery County High School building should be ready for board approval in the next few weeks.

He estimates it will cost up to $12 million with the state funding almost all of the cost and  the balance paid for by local sales tax revenue.

If okayed by the state, the new building would be located on a five-acre lot across the street from the current school, Rodgers says.

ImageThe school board also heard from Dr. C.B. Scott, a vice-president at Brewton-Parker College, who discussed what's called "Stand With Brewton-Parker College Day."

"It's a grass roots, community-led thing to call the community to come and physically show that they're standing with Brewton-Parker.  We are going through some accreditation issues and are working diligently to solve those problems and we're asking that this rally occur to show positive support for Brewton-Parker," he said.

The rally is Tuesday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gates Building parking lot at the college.
