ImageJuly 21--  Local law enforcement agencies came together on Thursday at the Durden Cabin in Partin Park in Lyons to hold a community wide safety seminar in light of recent tragic events that have happened in our community over the last several months.  The theme for the evening was safety and preparedness.

Coach Anson Callaway said, “The thing that I hoped we could accomplish is this, if we’re alert, if we’re conscious of the things that can happen.  We put the word to it, prevention, and it is prevention but sometimes we lull ourselves to sleep and develop bad habits.”  Callaway added, “You know the Bridgecom Company does security systems and they keep this kind of stuff on their mind all the time.  So when they came to me I said yes, yes this is needed.  I hope we can do this again periodically.

Carol Hansley attending the seminar and thought it was a success.  “I have been concerned about the level of violence that has occurred in the Toombs County-Vidalia area and I was hoping that our law enforcement and our community members would come together and take a more proactive approach and share some concerns and ideas and ways that we can address some of the problems that we’re having together.”

She added, “I think it was most helpful to see the police departments, the sheriff’s department, and the EMA representatives.  I think this is a great start.  I think the communication simple needs to continue and I do think we need to establish a rapport with our officers who have been charged with the duties of keeping everyone safe.  And we have a role to play as citizens as well.”
