Hospital Remains Closed
Friday, 11 July 2014

July 11--  Lower Oconee Community Hospital in Glenwood remains closed and there's no word on when or if the 25-bed facility will re-open.  Efforts to contact the hospital's new owner, Norman King, have been unsuccessful.

ImageIn the meantime, Wheeler County patients and others who may have been taken to the hospital in case of emergency are facing longer ambulance rides.   Andy Cone of Heartland Ambulance Service says patients are being taken to hospitals in Dublin and Vidalia.

"What used to be a half-hour call is now an hour-and-a-half or more," he says.  Because Heartland only has one ambulance to cover Wheeler County, there are instances when the county is uncovered when the ambulance has to leave the county.

The hospital closed due to financial problems.
