School Board OK's Lease Transfer
Thursday, 10 July 2014

July 10--  The Toombs County school board took action Thursday night that will help retain jobs in the county.

The school board voted to transfer its lease with U.S. Pet to another pet food company, Rayne Clinical of Kansas City, which is planning to keep up to 15 employees on the job producing pet food.  The lease covers a portion of the former Toombs County Middle School on the Collins Road which has been used as a lab for product development.

In other actons, the board tabled the fiscal year 2015 school system budget pending receipt of financial statements through May.

At the same time, the board agreed to end a six-year freeze on pay raises for all personnel for the next two years.  Budget officials say the raises are modest with 500 employees sharing a pot of $45,000 earmarked for the salary increase.

The school board is expected to approve the budget in August and the county's school system property tax rate in September.  The mil rate is expected to remain the same as this year, 13.956 mils.
