July 2--Mary Deane Chason Smith, age 92, of Vidalia, Georgia, died 2 July, 2014, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Smith was a native of Thomas County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Richard Harvey Chason and Mary Puarl Thompson Chason.  She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Walker Smith, Jr., and son Chason Lamar Smith.  Mrs. Smith is survived by three daughters:  Mary Charles Raines and husband Gary of Thomasville, Georgia; Jenny Ann Stafford and husband Kay of Vidalia, Georgia; Clara Susan Smith of Macon, Georgia; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Kathryn S. White of Macon, Georgia.  Many thanks to her devoted Caregivers:  Leslie M. Cox, Ruby Brownlee, Etta Smith, Shirley Carter, and Willie Mae Byrd.

Mary Deane grew up in the small southwest Georgia town of Ochlocknee, graduating from high school in 1937, and later attending the Joye Business School in Thomasville.  It was in Thomas County that she met and married Charles.  In 1951, they moved to Vidalia, making it their home for many years.  They eventually moved to Macon, Georgia, returning to Vidalia following Charles's retirement from the Georgia Power Company.

Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of The First United Methodist Church of Vidalia, past member of the Town and Country Garden Club, The Vidalia Women's Club and the Georgia Power Ambassadors. While she enjoyed several hobbies and interests through many years of good health, she was joyfully devoted to her family and friends.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Vidalia on Thursday from 5:30 until 7:30.

Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home of Vidalia and Whiddon Shiver Funeral Home of Thomasville are in charge of arrangements.  The Family will gather for a private graveside service at the Ochlocknee City Cemetery.
