Wednesday, 25 February 2009

February 25--  One of President Obama's top three priorities for the country is renewable energy and a local energy professional believes nuclear power should be an important part of the energy mix.

ImageW.L. "Sonny" Bargeron is the manager of the Southern Company's Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant on the Altamaha River between Vidalia and Baxley. "Right now worldwide, there are at least 99 plants under construction or being planned for construction.  I think China is planning to build 20 plants by 2020. In the United States, there are eleven plants which have applied for operating licenses and there are a couple of dozen more which are in the planning process to apply," Bargeron told the Vidalia Kiwanis Club Tuesday.

The Southern Company wants to build two more nuclear reactors at its Plant Vogel near Augusta.
