May 14--  A senior at Appling County High School is the winner of this year's Courtney Wilkes Ag & Vet Scholarship from the Vidalia Onion Business Council.

ImageSydney Graham wants to be a veterinarian and has been attending Georgia Southern University through Appling County High School's ACCEL program where she made the Dean's List majoring in biology with a pre-vet focus.  She's been accepted at the University of Georgia, and with two years of core curriculum under her belt at GSU, plans to start working on getting into the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine as soon as possible.

The scholarship program was created in honor of Toombs County High School student Courtney Wilkes who was brutally murdered while on vacation in Florida in June, 2011.

This is the third year the $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to a graduating senior in the Vidalia onion growing region who plans to pursue a career in agriculture or veterinary medicine.

The Vidalia Onion Business Council says supporters of Courtney and her family have donated enough to award at least one $1,000 annually for the next 20 years.
