Fatal Shooting in Toombs Co
Tuesday, 06 May 2014

May 6--  A fatal shooting late Monday afternoon in Toombs County appears to have been accidental, according to Sheriff Junior Kight.

The sheriff said 75-year-old Carl Hunt of 184 Hayden Jones Road was found in the yard of his family's mobile home in the Johnson Corner community.  He died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Sheriff Kight reports Hunt's six-year-old nephew was outside playing with Hunt's pistol when it went off.  The boy's mother and father were in the house at the time and heard a gunshot.

The little boy was too traumatized to talk, but the Sheriff says the fact the gun was found about ten feet from Hunt's body and the absence of powder burns on his body tends to rule out a self-inflicted wound.

The GBI is assisting with the investigation.
