Senatorial Candidate Visits Toombs Co
Monday, 28 April 2014

April 28--  One of seven candidates running in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Senator Saxby Chambliss visited Toombs County Monday for a fundraiser.

ImageCongressman Jack Kingston met with supporters at Chatters Restaurant in Lyons and appealed for the rural vote.

"Eighty percent of the vote is north of Interstate 20.  This part of the state has been largely bypassed by most people running for this seat.  You need to have somebody who knows Toombs County and knows the local area," Congressman Kingston said.

Congressman Kingston represented Toombs County when it was part of the 1st Congressional District.  He's been in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1993 and believes his experience will serve the state well if he is elected to the Senate.

"There's this appeal that you need an outsider.  Well, Barack Obama was an outsider.  You don't know what you're getting into, but if you know Jack Kingston, you know I'm tested and I'm proven and would never turn my back on Toombs County or any other part of the South," he said.

Kingston led the pack in fundraising in the first quarter of the year with contributions totaling $3.4 million.  His nearest competitor was businessman David Perdue of St. Simons who reported $2.4 million.
