Dennard Shining at Armstrong
Monday, 21 April 2014

April 22nd---Former Treutlen Viking Baseball standout R.J. Dennard is having a breakout year at Armstrong Atlantic University in Savannah.

ImageDennard, who came into his junior year with a .342 career average, enters the final two weeks of the regular season with a .391 batting average, a .675 slugging percentage and has 10 HR’s and 37 RBI’s.

He credits the experience he gained in his freshman and sophomore years and a stint in Baltimore over the summer as the main reasons for this year’s breakout. “I can go back to my high school years and my freshman and sophomore year was a catching up game and I guess it’s the same way in college, you have to catch up with the level of competition.

“During my junior year in high school, I figured out the swing and how to get the ball over the fence and I think, along with this summer in Baltimore, I learned a few things that have helped me this year.”

The 10 HR’s, 37 RBI’s, 391 average and 469 OBA is impressive on it’s own, but even more impressive is the fact that Dennard has only struck out 9 times in 151 plate appearances.

He is among the Top 10 in the Peach Belt Conference in Batting Average and also is 2nd in the conference in homeruns, two categories that lead the Pirates, who finish their regular season with a series on the road against Lander April 25th & 26th and then at home against Belmont Abbey May 3rd & 4th.
