March 6--Image

Recently the Montgomery County High School weightlifting team competed in the GACA single A state weightlifting competition at Statesboro High School on March 1st. The team was compromised of 15 athletes, which all play at least one or more other sport at MCHS. Athletes are grouped in weightlifting divisions based on their body weight. Each competitor participates in three lifts, the bench-press, squat, and power clean. The total weight of all three lifts is then tallied. The top 6 lifters from each weight class were awarded a medal and scored team points based on their placing. Of the 15 student athletes that represented MCHS, 8 of them placed in the top 6 in their weight classes. Juniors that placed in the top 6 in their weight classes were Brandon Carswell, Paul Legrant, Jaland Kelly, Demarria Wright, Able Lopez, Craig Snead, and Anderson Davis. Sophmore, Gamel Lawton, also placed in the top 6 in his weight class.

After the team points were scored, MCHS earned 4th place in class single A. Coach Richards, the weightlifting teacher at MCHS, described the team as “A hard working group of young men that enjoy competing against each other in the weight room every day. It was no surprise to me that they competed well against athletes from other schools across the state. For some of these guys it was their first time attending a weightlifting competition and they really didn’t know what to expect. I encouraged them to focus on themselves and everything would work itself out. I am real pleased with our team performance, but even more pleased with the overall gains that many of our athletes have made over the last two years!”
