TCHS Improves SAT Scores
Wednesday, 18 February 2009

February 18--  Bleckley County High School leads Region 4-AA schools in Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores with Toombs County High School a strong second and Vidalia High School in third place.

Based on the most recent test scores from 2008, Toombs test-takers improved their overall score by 38 points over the previous year.  "It's a great bunch, and I'm delighted to be a part of them," says Toombs principal Gail Clark.

Most of the improvement was on the SAT writing test.  "A couple of years ago, our students didn't do as well on the Georgia High School Graduation Test in writing as we wanted them to.  We've done a school-wide writing across the curriculum, and I believe the fact our faculty worked as a team to improve writing scores is what made the difference," Mrs. Clark observes.

School Superintendent Dr. Kendall Brantley reports the latest SAT scores place Toombs students in the top 87 percent statewide, and Mrs. Clark says that's significant given the school's resources.  "The fact we have such a high rate of poverty in this area or lower socio-economic students, and the fact we continue to score well and rank high speaks well for the staff, the parents and the support the community gives for this school," she said.

Even though Vidalia placed third, its 2008 overall score fell by 57 points from the previous year with the biggest drops in math and writing.

In Region 2-A, Treutlen High came in third place with Montgomery County High School placing seventh out of nine schools.  Both Treutlen and Montgomery had lower SAT scores in 2008 than they did in 2007.
