Qualifying Starts Today

March 3--  Candidates who want to run for office in the May 20th primary election have until noon Friday of this week to get their names on the ballot.

In addition to federal and state races, there are local races for offices in Georgia's counties including Toombs, Montgomery and Treutlen counties.

Two county commission seats are up for election in Toombs County.  They are in District One now represented by Roy Lee Williams and District Four represented by Jeff McCormick.

There are four Toombs County Board of Education seats to be filled.  They include the chairman's job currently held by Daniel Caraway, District One represented by Russ Benton, District Three by Rahn Milligan and District Five held by John Holland.

In Montgomery County Commission qualifying, the Uvalda district seat held by County Commissioner John Carpenter is up for election as is the District Three, Post Two seat held by Commissioner Clarence Thomas.

Two Montgomery County Board of Education seats are up for election including that of Chairman Jim Paul Poole and District Three Post Two board member Charley Robison.

Also on the ballot will be that of Magistrate now held by Mona Bell.

There will be four offices up for election in Treutlen County.

On the Treutlen County Commission, qualifying will be for the District Two seat held by Hugh Brantley and the District Five seat held by Cashaunda Smith.

Treutlen Board of Education seats in the election are the District Three seat occupied by Alvin Heath and the District Five seat of Demetria Noble.

Also on the May 20th ballot are two Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax Referendums.  Voters in Toombs and Montgomery counties will decide if they want to extend a one percent special purpose local option sales tax to pay for capital improvement projects in their respective counties.
