Spay Day in Toombs Co

February 26--  Tuesday was national "Spay Day" in the U.S. and the Sweet Onion Animal Protection Society (SOAPS) in Toombs County held its annual "Spay-Ghetti" dinner to raise money.

SOAPS Executive Therisa Ingley says the money is used primarily for two purposes.

"In 2013, we moved 1,500 animals out of this community to adopive homes or to rescue groups in other parts of the country.  We also provided over 1,500 low cost spay-neuters last year.  That means we provided a $100 voucher toward having your animal sterilized so that won't have more cats and dogs," she said.

SOAPS volunteers work closely with animal control facilities in Lyons and Vidalia to rescue dogs and cats.

Vidalia Police Chief Frank Waits says they share a common vision.

"The care of the animals is number one to them and that should be number one with everybody.  Those babies out there are full of love and they just want somebody to love them.  SOAPS trys to help by finding them a forever home," he says.

Ingley says the working relationship with Lyons animal control has turned around since the city council put Lyons Police Chief Wesley Walker in charge.

Chief Walker says it's mutual.

"Since I've taken it over, SOAPS has been a tremendous help.  They are constantly out there helping us keep the kennel clean and checking with us to see if they can help adopt dogs out.  They've done a great job and it's been a big asset to me," he said.

SOAPS spends thousands of dollars each year to save animals and Ingley says they need citizens to contribute funds and volunteers to help with animal care and transportation.  Donations are tax deductible.
