State DOT Reorganization
Tuesday, 17 February 2009

February 17- One state lawmaker calls it a transportation revolution. Governor Perdue and other legislative leaders are backing a new plan to reorganize the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) and combine two other transportation agencies into a single entity.

Senate president pro tem Tommie Williams of Lyons says what the DOT is doing now with transportation projects isn't working, "I've waited for projects in my district for 13 years, and I'm in leadership and can't get them done.  For one reason or another, and it's often a different reason every time you go back to DOT, the projects are being held up."

Under the proposal, the DOT would continue to maintain roads, but a new state transportation authority would be involved in planning and funding projects.
