VHS Wrestling Team Finishes Fourth In Area Tournament

The Vidalia Indians tied with East Laurens for fourth place in the Area I AA Tournament.  The Indians qualified six wrestlers for next week’s East Sectional Tournament.  Jawaun Miller finished fourth at 132 pounds, Darnell Hendley finished third at 152 pounds, Shakeem Lassiter finished third at 285 pounds, Tyler Campbell finished second at 145 pounds, Devin Johnson finished second at 182 pounds, and Daniel Copeland finished second at 195 pounds.  All ten of the Indian wrestlers finished in the top six with Chris Jones finishing fifth at 170 pounds, Michael Joiner (126), Reggie Lamb (138), and Trace Simmons (220) finishing in sixth place.  Coach Blount stated, “We had a great tournament this weekend and look forward to Dublin next week.”

The tournament started with Miller and Lassiter winning their first round matches.  In the quarterfinals, Campbell, Hendley, Johnson, Copeland, Simmons, and Lassiter posted wins to put six Indians in the semifinals.  The first night ended with impressive wins by Joiner and Miller.  Saturday morning opened with four Indians wrestling in the consolation quarterfinals and four Indians; Joiner, Miller, Lamb, and Jones; posting wins.  “Saturday morning was the best display we have had in several years”, expounded Coach Fullam.  With ever member of the Vidalia Wrestling team in the Championship or Consolation semifinals, the team was confident in not only qualifying members for sectionals but also a high team placing.  In the semifinals matches three Indians advanced to the finals; Campbell, Johnson, and Copeland; with big wins.  Lassiter lost in the semifinals with a double overtime nail biter.  During the finals matches the Indians performed well to finish with six sectional qualifiers and every member of the team in a place winning match.  Coach Ferry commented, “The team was able to put together two solid days of wrestling.  Coach Blount, Coach Fullam, and I are very proud of the tournament our guys had.  We had every member of our team in a position to win a place at the area tournament.  That is all you can ask of your team.”
