VHS Indian Wrestling Team

January 30--The Indian wrestling team finished fifth out of twenty seven teams in the Sweet Onion Invitational in Lyons behind a strong team and individual performance.  Devin Johnson won the 182 pound weight class.  Johnson defeated Turner of Dublin, Blake of Glynn Academy, and the number two seed Mack of South Effingham to advance to the finals. 

In the finals, Johnson faced a familiar foe in Gaffney of Toombs County.  Gaffney has handed Johnson 3 of his 4 losses on the season.  Johnson defeated Gaffney 8-6 in sudden victory overtime to win the 182 pound Sweet Onion Classic Championship.  Tyler Campbell and Shakeem Lassiter were also in the finals.  Campbell at 145 pounds, defeated Grinnell of Crisp County, Armstrong of Fitzgerald, and Butler of West Laurens to earn a spot in the finals.  Poke of Turner County defeated Campbell in the finals in a tough match.  Lassiter made the 285 pound finals match with wins over Carswell of Montgomery County, Kimsey of Metter, and Hester of Toombs County in an exciting triple overtime match.  Green of West Laurens avenged an earlier loss by defeating Lassiter 3-1.  Senior Daniel Copeland at 195 pounds finished fourth with wins over Turner of Coffee County and Irish of South Effingham.

Other Indians wrestling in the tournament and scoring for the Indians were: Michael Joiner with 3 wins, Jawaun Miller with 1 win, Reggie Lamb with 2 wins, Darnell Hendley with 2 wins, Julian McCaig with 1 win, Nick Beale with 2 wins, Chris Jones, and Jesse Conley.
