Mrs. Joan Berry, Mount Vernon

January 13-- Mrs. Joan Helms Berry, age 78, of Mt. Vernon, died Sunday, January 12, 2014 in the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia after a brief illness. 

She was a native of Vidalia and lived there until moving to Mt. Vernon in 1980.  She worked as a bookkeeper for Thelkeld Motor Company, Russell Chevrolet, Brown Datsun and most recently assisted her husband, the late Richard “Bill” Berry in the family business.  

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia and the Caring and Sharing Sunday School Class.  She was a member of the Ailey Garden Club, and may have been best known for playing the piano in Toombs and Montgomery Counties.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Eudell Helms; and five siblings, Evelyn, Judge, Dewey, Dean and Ray.

Mrs. Berry is survived by four children, Beverly B. Moncus and husband David of Evans, Rhett B. Dismuke and husband Andy of Lyons, Rick Berry and wife Mary of Lyons, and Calvin Berry and Kevin McClellan of North Augusta, South Carolina; mother-in-law, Sara D. Berry of Americus; nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 14th at 11:00 am in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Bucky Kennedy and Tom Moore officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 5:00 until 8:00.
