Mr. Melvin Mixon, Vidalia

January 3-- Mr. Melvin Mixon, age 92, of Vidalia, died Friday, January 3, 2014 in Oxley Health and Rehabilitation in Lyons after an extended illness. 

He was born in Garfield, grew up in Metter, and was a graduate of Vidalia High School and Brewton-Parker College.  He was a veteran of World War II and was an anti aircraft directional operator.  He fought in eight war zones in the European African Eastern Theater; including Sicily, Rome Arno, southern France, Naples Foggia, and Germany, and was the recipient of five Bronze Stars. 

He moved to Vidalia in 1946 where he began his career with Piggly Wiggly as the printing manager, in which he did faithfully for thirty-six years.  After retirement, he worked for Suburban Printing in Higgston for ten years.  He was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling, especially to the Blue Ridge Mountains in the fall.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Gay Mixon; parents, Arthur and Ava Belle Greenway Mixon; and sister, Rubye Mixon Clark.

Mr. Mixon is survived by four children, Glenn Mixon and wife Vicki of Vidalia, Melva Mixon Fowler and husband Royce of Soperton, Timothy Watson Mixon of Lyons, and Ava Lea Mixon Pierce and husband Barry of Henderson, Texas; one sister, Nell Mixon Butler of Savannah; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and three nieces.

The graveside funeral service will be held Monday, January 6th at 11:00 am in Lakeview Memorial Gardens with Reverend Kevin Hicks officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Toombs Arc, P.O. Box 27, Lyons GA 30436.
