December 12--  High school graduation rates for the class of 2013 in Georgia improved somewhat.

The Georgia Department of Education reports the graduation rate statewide went up almost two percentage points to 71.5%.

In our area, seven high schools saw improved graduation rates and four others showed decreases.

Showing improvements are Emanuel County Institute with a graduation rate of 87.5% followed by Appling County High School with 83%, Wheeler County with 79%, Vidalia High School with 74%, Montgomery Co High School with 72%, Swainsboro High School with 71% and Tattnall County High School with 66%.

Vidalia School Superintendent Dr. Garrett Wilcox is glad to see the upward trend in the graduation rate at Vidalia High School, but would like to see more.

"We were happy to see the graduation rate go up.  We're not content with where we are.  We were hoping we'd be somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 percent, but we fell a little short.  On the other hand, we're up to nearly 75 percent which is an increase from the year before," he said.

The graduation rate at Jeff Davis High School fell from 78% to 73%, Metter High School had a big drop from 81% to 72%, Treutlen dropped from 75% to 70%, and Toombs County decreased from 69% to 67%.
