BPC Runner in NAIA Finals
Monday, 09 December 2013

December 9-- Iryine Chelangat competed at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships in convincing fashion. Being the only athlete from Brewton-Parker, she represented the institution with great humility.

ImageCompeting among the nation’s best runners, she was able to claim the 95th fastest time out of 319 competitors with a time of 21:46. In her previous appearance, she placed 219th out of 320 runners.

Coach William Parker said, “I am extremely proud of Iryine’s perseverance through the race. We knew coming in that we had a good chance at placing in the top 100. The race conditions however, made it tough for us to set a personal best. Consequently, being cognoscente of our position during the race was critical; every mile and every second mattered. Her performance today was an excellent example of Baron toughness. The 25 degree course temperature proved to be a challenge for us. She was inexperienced in cold weather racing, but found way to push ahead. The cold seemed to take a toll on her body, yet it was her heart and mind that carried her to the finish. We did not run as fast as we wanted, but the race was all about positioning. Chelangat ended the season strong and courageous; now we have to carry that momentum into the spring season.”

Chelangat is now gearing her sights on qualifying for the NAIA Track & Field National Championships.
