Mr. Ned Shuman, Vidalia

October 18--  Mr. Ned L. Shuman, age 70, of Vidalia, died Thursday, October 17, 2013 in Memorial Health University Hospital in Savannah after a sudden illness.  He was a native of Vidalia and lived there most of his life.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland Myron and Martha Katherine Sumner Shuman. 

He was a 1960 Graduate of the Vidalia High School and a 1970 Graduate of Georgia Southern University.  In 2002, Mr. Shuman retired as safety specialist for the Southern Nuclear Company at Plant Hatch. 

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Vidalia and was a proud charter member of the Four Rivers Patriots Sons of the American Revolution where he was presently serving as the Organizing President at the time of his death.  Recognized by the National Society SAR and the Georgia State Society SAR for his work in organizing the chapter and for the record number of men he sponsored for membership in the new chapter.  Also, he was a member of the State Board of Management. 

He was a member of the Georgia Power Ambassadors where he served two terms as president and vice-president.  He was a member of the Meadows Regional Medical Center Foundation Board and a member of the advisory board for Brewton-Parker College’s Historic Village.  He was a former member of the Vidalia Rotary and the local board for Habitat for Humanity. 

Ned was an amateur genealogist, historian and gardener.  He enjoyed an occasional Crown Royal and a good cigar.  He was happiest when he was with his beloved family and with the many friends he so loved.  His last gift to his fellow man was being an organ donor.  Even to the end, Ned was a true patriot. 

Mr. Shuman is survived by his wife Gladys Rose Shuman; one son, Lee Shuman and wife Nikki of Alpharetta; three grandchildren, Connor Leland, Barbara Katherine and Cole Edward Shuman of Alpharetta; one sister, Sue Shuman Zittrouer and husband Herbert  P. “Buzzy” of Springfield, several nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, October 20th at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Reverend Robert Greene officiating.  Four Rivers Patriots SAR and the Georgia Power Ambassadors will serve as honorary pallbearers. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 until 3:00.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Four Rivers Patriots Sons of the American Revolution Scholarship Fund in honor of Ned Leland Shuman, Sr., C/O Steve DeWell, 453 Bostwick Circle, Vidalia GA 30474 or the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 150, Vidalia GA 30475.

Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home of Vidalia is in charge of arrangements.
