Headmaster John Dorminey addressed the crowd which gathered to honor Mr. Vaughn's service to the school.  His remarks are below.

"We are pleased to welcome you here today to mark a dedication to one of the first, most ardent and most steadfast supporters of RTCA, Mr. Calvin Vaughn. Mr. Vaughn is one of the school’s founding fathers and is our longest serving board member.

In the spring of 1970, a group of concerned parents met in Vidalia, while another group met in Lyons to discuss the future education for their children. Mr. Bill Braswell of Lyons and Mr. Calvin Vaughn of Vidalia called a meeting at the Toombs County Courthouse in Lyons to join the two factions, with all other interested parents invited to attend. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the possibility of establishing a private school in Toombs County that would offer a strong academic curriculum within a Christian environment in which to learn. All in attendance felt strongly the need to establish a private school in order to preserve their Christian beliefs. With much prayer, planning and working as a united family, the task of establishing a Christian institution began.

After many, many hours of hard work, devotion and unwavering faith, Robert Toombs Christian Academy opened its doors on September 8, 1970. It was a completely finished, brick, fully carpeted, fully air conditioned building. The school welcomed 185 students in grades one through ten, ten faculty members and one Headmaster.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Robert Toombs Christian Academy did not evolve into the great educational institution it is today overnight. It took much prayer, dedication and perseverance from many dedicated and faithful people. In fact, faith seemed to be the greatest trait they all possessed. Over the years, there have been many faithful contributors and supporters of the school. They paved the way for the leadership of our many headmasters, headmistress, teachers, staff, volunteers and other supporters – all of whom have taught and influenced our children in so many positive ways. With forty-one graduating classes from RTCA, we have so much for which to be grateful.

In essence, the establishment of Robert Toombs Christian Academy reflected a community partnership - a partnership of parents, teachers, community members, students, administrators and local government. And within that partnership was revealed a community that cared and was willing to take action. Together, ordinary people accomplished something extraordinary. RTCA became symbolic of a community that cares and is willing to join together to do what is needed for our children and grandchildren, meeting the needs of today and keeping the promise of tomorrow. Calvin Vaughn was and continues to be a vital part of that effort and today, we celebrate that accomplishment.

It is with a great love and appreciation that we dedicate Calvin Vaughn Circle. We honor Mr.Vaughnnot just for his vision, but for his commitment to bringing it to fruition and keeping it alive, year after year. Mr. Vaughn’s decades of dedication and service to RTCA have truly been a blessing. His steadfast support and leadership have helped our school not just to grow – but to flourish. To Mr. Vaughn, we thank you for your vision, your dedication and your unwavering support that began on that spring day in March 1970.

May Robert Toombs Christian Academy remain strong in its principles and teachings, and may it always represent education as it should be. Remember:Once a Crusader. Always a Crusader!"
