August 2—ImageFormer Treutlen Viking baseball standout and current 1st baseman for the Armstrong Atlantic State University Pirates R.J. Dennard is playing summer baseball in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. Dennard is a member of the Baltimore Redbirds and has a .310 batting average.

“ This is a great experience for me to be able to come to Baltimore and play with and against some of the best Division 1 players and to see how I stack up. We are 26-19 this summer and are one of the final three teams, and I think we are coming together at the right time and have a chance to win it all.” Dennard said.

R.J. is staying with a host family in Baltimore along with a roommate from Wake Forrest.

“ Our host family the Shelly’s are awesome, they will do anything for us. They treat us just like a son.” Dennard said.

Dennard will be a junior this fall at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah.

“ We are going to rebuild again this year with a new coach and I feel like he is going to bring in some new guys and maybe he can get us over the hump and hopefully make it to a World Series.” Dennard stated.
