Job Help Available
Thursday, 29 January 2009

January 29--  If you're out of work, the first place you should contact about a job is the Georgia Labor Department Office located in the Carter Center off Highway 280 in Vidalia.

"We focus heavily on helping individuals find jobs.  We try our best to contact local employers and solicit job orders and then we turn around and try to make them available for job seekers," reports local Labor Department Director Monty Craft.

For workers who have been laid off, the state of Georgia has started a program to help get them back on the payroll.  "Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond created a program called 'Georgia Works' which is a training initiative to stimulate job growth and hiring.  This allows employers to audition poential  workes at no cost to them.  For employees, it allows those who are laid off and qualify for unemployment benefits to get their foot in the door and show their potential employer they are the ones who need to be hired. While they're in this training program, they still receive their unemployment benefits and they also receive a training allowance," Craft says.

Craft also advises job seekers to "keep an updated resume and I think it would be a good idea to brush up on your interview skills.  If an individual would like to come by our office, we offer workshops on preparing resumes and on job interviews.  Anything we can do to help someone get a job, that's what we are here for," he notes.
