Jobs Available in Toombs Co

January 28--  The unemployment rate in Toombs County is nearly ten percent, however, it's been worse.

Monty Craft with the state Labor Department Office in Vidalia says the late 1990's saw more people unemployed.  "Currently our unemployment rate is 9.8%.  The last time unemployment was this high in Toombs County was in December, 1999 when it reached 11.7%.  The record unemployment in Toombs County is 12.3% and that took place back in January, 1997," he reports.

Despite all the talk about people being out of work, Craft says local companies are still looking for employees.  "We have 100 job postings listed with us in a variety of different listings from production worker, nurses aide, practical nurses, retail, retail management, correctional officer, bookkeepers, tool and dye makers, shipping and receiving, insurance sales and farm job openings," he notes.

And if you're looking for a job, Craft believes the most important thing is your attitude.  "Don't give up.  There are job openings out there.  Continue to be patient and call as many employers as you can.  You can find a position even though it may not be the exact position that you want, it may be something until that exact perfect position can come through," he says.

Craft recommends you make sure your resume is up-to-date and that you brush up on your job interview skills. His office conducts workshops on both subjects and he invites you to stop by the Carter Center in Vidalia to see how they can help you.
