Memorial Day 2013
Monday, 27 May 2013

May 27--  The annual Memorial Day program hosted by the local VFW Auxiliary gave local citizens a chance to remember those who gave their lives serving in the United States Military.

ImageLieutenant Colonel David Pittman (shown here with Auxiliary Mistress of Ceremonies Shirley Curl) from the Third Infantry Division at Fort Stewart reminded the audience that Memorial Day grew from the acts of women of the Confederacy who decorated the graves of Union soldiers in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Members of the VFW Auxiliary and local Girl Scouts spent time over the weekend placing American Flags on the graves of veterans buried in the Lyons City Cemetery and Lakeview Memorial Gardens south of Vidalia.

ImageThe program included the reading of names of Toombs County servicemembers killed in the nation's wars.  Included are 15 from World War I, 48 from World War II, seven from Korea and 12 from Vietnam.

Memorial Day music was provided by Diane McBride and members of the Lyons First United Methodist Church choir.
