Communities of Opportunity Meeting in Toombs Co
Tuesday, 27 January 2009

January 27--  Elected leaders in Toombs County, Vidalia and Lyons will decide if they want to take part in a state program designed to help economic development in rural counties.

Jim Crowdis from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs introduced the Communities of Opportunity concept at a planning meeting Monday at the Toombs County courthouse.  "Both the cities and the county will have to agree to work together on this project.  It's not a lot of money involved, but it's an opportunity for the community to decide on what two or three goals they might be able to accomplish within about a two-year period," Crowdis says.

The state would provide $5,000 in seed money which would have to be matched locally.  If the goals are accomplished, the community would be in a better position to compete for state grants in the future, according to Crowdis.
