May 14 --  A Toombs County teenager is the Georgia champion in trap shooting.

ImageDenton Tapley has been a member of the 4-H Modified Trap gun team for two years, but he has been “breaking” clays for many years.  Denton, a student at Robert Toombs Christian Academy in Lyons, brought home State Champion honors at the 4-H State Modified Trap Match at Rock Eagle Saturday.

His hours of practice paid off as he broke 25 of 25 targets in the first round which advanced him to a second round shoot off.  He tied with his opponent in the second round and ended up edging him by one point in the championship round.  Denton is the son of Vickey Horton Tapley and Duston Tapley.   Congratulations Denton!
