Saturday is Derby Day in Lyons

May 2--  Race officials have been checking the cars all week and Saturday is the big day for the Southest Georgia Soap Box Derby in Lyons.

Race Chairman Michael Williamson says the field this year is the biggest ever.

"We have 58 racers this year.  We've added a SuperStock Division which means the kids who have won the Stock Division or who have outgrown the Stock Division can race in the SuperStock Division," he says.

Opening ceremonies are planned for 7:45 a.m. with the first cars scheduled to go downhill on North Victory Drive at 8 a.m.

Williamson expects to see some faster speeds this year, "We've been reaching about 32 miles per hour in the Stock Division and we're hoping to get 35 to 38 miles per hour out of the older kids," he predicts.

Winners of both divisions and their parents will attend this summer's Soap Box Derby World Championship in Akron, Ohio.

The weekend gets started with the Soap Box Derby Street Dance with the Tiger Creek Band Friday night at six in downtown Lyons.  All the racers will be introduced and you'll get to see this year Soap Box Derby Queens.
