Those Sweet Vidalia Onions!

April 20--  A large field of competitors turned out Saturday for the world-famous Vidalia Onion Eating Contest "Under the Pines" on Airport Road in Vidalia.


Hosted by the Vidalia Lions Club and emceed by Lion Barron Godbee (right), the contest awards cash prizes to the person who can eat the most Sweet Vidalia Onions in three minutes.

ImageEleven-time winner Cody Peters (white T-shirt) downed nine onions to win the 17-year and over category.  Sporting a gold ribbon in his beard, he dedicated his $100 prize to the family of little Silas Edenfield, the four-year-old Lyons boy fighting liver cancer.

ImageThe winner in 12-16 age category is Toombs County High School Bulldog Tyler Luke who downed ten "Vidalias" in three minutes.  Two years ago he competed and came in second.

ImageIn the under 11 age group, former Vidalia resident Laima Tye ate five onions.  She now lives in Atlanta but came back home to enjoy the festival and defend her title.  She was the winner last year.
