Saturday, 20 April 2013

ImageApril 20--  Once again local area cooks turned out in large numbers to show off their unique dishes for this year’s Vidalia Onion Recipe Contest with an outstanding variety of dishes utilizing the unique taste of the sweet Vidalia onion.  Miss Annie Higgins was the grand prize winner with her Blueberry Buckle Cake.

"I learned about this when I was introduced to the Blueberry Buckle Pie by a Chef Lynn of Canada.  She cooked for us and gave us the recipe and told us there were no onions in it.  I told her, you give me that recipe and I will put onions in it and put my little twist on it.  So she is going to be very proud of me,” Miss Higgins said.  “I’ve been entering for such a long time and winning 2nd and 3rd places.  I just waited patiently and had God on my side,” she added.

In addition to winning the Grand Prize, Miss Higgins was first place in the Main Dish category with her “Vidalia Onion Pie”.  Frances Douberly won first place in the Appetizer category with “Zucchini Onion Muffins”.
